Programme Homme Cologne arrived in 1987 as Lancôme's take on the classic aromatic fougère, and it reads as a drier, more resinous cousin to the bright citrus fougères of its era. The opening is sharp and green: basil's cool, slightly anisic edge cuts through lime peel, giving a bracing, almost tonic-like lift before the heart settles. There, oakmoss and geranium anchor the composition, with lime and lemon persisting well past the top to keep the middle luminous rather than heavy.

The base is where this one earns collector attention. Labdanum brings a warm, leathery-ambery shadow, and olibanum adds a faint smoky-resinous dryness that keeps the moss from turning soapy. The overall arc is fresh-spicy at the top, mossy-aromatic through the middle, and quietly amber-woody at the close. It suits a wearer who likes traditional fougères but wants less sweetness and more resin — a mature, office-appropriate scent for cool weather or evening wear.
