Cuir de Russie

Cuir de Russie (1872) is one of Aimé Guerlain's earliest surviving compositions, built around the Russian leather tradition of birch-tar tanning rather than a modern smooth hide. The opening is herbal and bracing: lavender, rosemary and thyme lead into a heart where smoky birch and powdery iris meet benzoin, labdanum and styrax. The base is dense and animalic, with civet, musk, oakmoss, resins, vetiver and amber giving the drydown its amber-weighted, musky-woody character.

Collectors should expect a historical leather: aromatic at the top, resinous and powdery through the middle, and deeply animalic underneath. It suits wearers comfortable with civet, birch tar and moss, and reads as unisex in the old manner, neither sweet nor clean. Best for cool weather, evening wear, or study rather than daily rotation. Because the formula predates modern restrictions, vintage examples vary widely in condition and character; sample where possible and judge each bottle on its own merits.

整體是老派皮革的氣質：開頭芳香、中段樹脂粉感、底層動物性明顯，男女皆宜卻既不甜也不潔淨。適合能接受麝貓、樺木焦油與苔香的老香玩家，冷天、夜晚或單純研究都很合適，不宜當日常。由於配方早於現代限制，老瓶狀態差異極大，選購前最好先試，逐瓶判斷。
